Each answer is the one before plus 7.
7 times table
7 times table practice, from 1 × 7 to 9 × 7 = 63 and 42 ÷ 7 = 6: the table that often sticks last, learnt through its neighbours, then dividing by 7.
Your child can only do the exercises here once they know the 6 times table. The 7s have no trick of their own, so they are reached from next door: a child who knows 6 × 7 = 42 gets 7 × 7 as one more seven, 49.
Usually taught in Year 4 in England and Wales, around ages 8 to 9. Every child goes at their own pace; this is a guide, not a requirement.

7 times table
Times 7 is times 5 plus times 2: 6 × 7 = 30 + 12.
What times 7 gives the answer? Say the table until you hear it.
Dividing by 7
What times 7 makes it? Find it in the 7 times table.
The number that was divided is the answer times 7.
Sometimes the answer is missing, sometimes a number before it.
Why it matters
The 7s have no handy trick like the 5s or the 9s, which is why they are often the last to stick. Yet there is less to learn than it seems. Because you can swap the numbers round, your child already knows 7 × 2, 7 × 5 and 7 × 10 from other tables, and once the 6s, 8s and 9s are in place too, only 7 × 7 is left as a genuinely new fact. These are the facts that tend to slow children down in the Multiplication Tables Check at school, where each question has six seconds.
How to approach it
Working from a neighbour that is already secure works well. 8 × 7 is 7 × 7 plus another 7, so 49 + 7 = 56. Or from the 10s: 10 × 7 = 70, minus two sevens, 56. Working it out is fine here, as long as it is needed less and less.
Precisely because the 7s take time, the division facts pay off twice. 56 ÷ 7 = 8 is the same fact as 8 × 7 = 56, so every division also practises the table itself.
When is it secure?
All 10 right in one round, and no more than 30 seconds altogether. Around 3 seconds a sum shows your child is no longer counting.
